Elephants, rhinos, lions, leopard, and buffaloes. In safari context, together these magnificent animals are known as The Big Five and are must-sees during a trip in Africa. Of course, depending on which national reserve you visit, not all might have made their home there, but it’s fun to play this game and make a list of animals to encounter. Many more different and interesting animals live in the great plains and savannahs of Africa, so there is definitely not a lack of wildlife here. Make sure to bring a camera that allows you to zoom in from afar to capture these memories in images that you’ll be able to treasure forever.
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest coral reef structure in the world and a wonder of the natural world. It has a length of more than 2,000 kilometers and is thousands of years old. The reef is breathtakingly beautiful from above and under water. Snorkeling or diving parts of the reef will surprise you in the diversity of marine life and the creatures you’ll encounter. Thousands of species of fish and sea turtles inhabit this reef and are a sight to behold. You could also go for a special flight in a small plane above the reef to get some amazing sights from above. The most spectacular and beautiful views are a little off the coast and hard to reach from the beach. This is a pricey trip, but worth it for the views and memories.
The Amazon rainforest has reached almost mythical status and it is for good reason. It covers millions of square kilometers and is the largest and most intact rainforest that remains on the planet. About 30 percent of the world’s biodiversity can be found here with scientists estimating that much has yet to be discovered. A trip to the Amazon is impressive in its variety and diversity, you’ll be amazed by the sheer number of plants and wildlife. Many of the best wildlife live high up in the tree tops or in the undergrowth, so taking a good ranger with you when you traverse the forest is important. There are a large variety of trips available, from jungle river tours to adventurous trekking options.
